Digital Rights Management (DRM) System

AllRights
“The art of securing web content”

The impact of technology on the way of doing business has never been so significant. In recent years, technology has leveled the playing field, allowing new, small companies to effectively compete with mature and established corporations. For publishers, the World Wide Web has had a significant influence, opening up new ways of delivering content to both new and existing customers. Publishers are torn between the desire to enter this vast market and the need to protect their premium content.

Most existing methods for protecting digital content (so called Digital Rights Management systems) are based on the use of a proprietary “reader” to encrypt content and control access. This method is considered inconvenient by the customer who is discouraged by a cumbersome software download and is unable to easily access and browse the purchased content. Some vendors also provide a DRM system as a service. This approach requires a high level of integration and is usually not cost effective. Publishers are also unhappy with the idea that they no longer have complete control over their own content.

To effectively respond to these challenges, C.D.I. Systems has introduced AllRights – a robust “stand-alone” DRM solution that protects content within a standard web browser and offers a high level of granularity while at the same time enabling the publisher to control customer privileges and safeguard web resources against unauthorized access.

AllRights adopts a browser-based approach using a thin, secure and transparent software client (SafeView) that controls the security options defined by the Content Service Provider for each individual item and for each individual user. Standard functions like viewing, selecting, copying, screen capture, saving and printing can be fully controlled. Use of controlled functions can be set for a limited time or limited number of uses (for example view document for 5 minutes, or allow printing only 3 times). No cumbersome installation is needed, and having used the system once, subsequent uses are completely transparent to the customer.

AllRights “attaches” seamlessly to Microsoft’s Internet Information Services® (IIS) thus enabling the publisher to control customer privileges and to safeguard web resources against unauthorized access.

AllRights is an offshoot of C.D.I. Systems’ fully integrated e-Publishing platform – NetIS™ - the world's first e-publishing solution that integrates Web Content Management (WCM), Digital Rights Management (DRM) and e-commerce tools into a single, integrated solution.

AllRights Workflows

Never before has the management of digital rights been made so easy, as with AllRights:

When managing AllRights customers through the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), the administrator creates his own customer database, and later provides specific rights and privileges to the customer base according to the following groups:

  • Free Access – AllRights DRM not enforced,
  • Everyone – free access with no need to authenticate, but with limited rights,
  • Registered Users – only authenticated customers have default rights,
  • Specific customer - limited access to authenticated customer with specific rights.

AllRights can be enforced on any of the Web Resources declared in the IIS:

  • Web sites,
  • Directories (including virtual folders),
  • Files (any web file - including HTML, XML, DHTML, ASP, PHP etc.),
  • Resources (including Scripts, Style Sheets, Images etc’).

When enforced, AllRights allows customer access to any protected web entity with the combinations of the following rights:

  • View,
  • Copy,
  • Save,
  • Print,
  • Print Screen,
  • Preview for a few seconds,
  • Distort Content (Blur, Pixelate, Hide…)

Using a standard security protocol, SSL , encrypted information is delivered to the authenticated customer, locally decrypted and activated within SafeView.
